Is Hypnobirthing right for me?

Hypnobirthing might be for you if:

  • You intuitively believe birth can be beautiful and life affirming, but don’t quite know how to go about achieving it in the current maternity system.

  • You are apprehensive about giving birth, and want to shift your mindset from one of fear or anxiety to that of calm, confidence and excited anticipation.

  • You have had a previously traumatic or difficult birth and want to explore ways to make your next birth a more positive experience.

Breakdown of the course

The course is split into 4 sessions, each lasting approximately 2.5 hours

Session one - The Logic of Hypnobirthing

The power of the mind - How it can negatively impact birth and how you can get it to work more helpfully.

The science stuff:  How your body is designed to birth a baby. We will deep dive into the muscles of the uterus, changes to the cervix and the birth hormones.

Session two - The Hypnobirthing Techniques

Breathing: The importance of breathing during labour and how you can use your breath to relax and release tension during surges.

Relaxation: a two-fold tool for reframing how you feel about birth and to help enter a state of relaxation during labour.

Physical preparation: optimal position of baby, how how to prevent tearing, how to plan a positive and gentle caesarean

Session three - Before Birth

Induction of Labour: The due date fallacy, understanding when induction might (or might not) be appropriately, and exploring how to have a positive induction.

Taking responsibility for your birth: How to make positive decisions that are right for you and your baby, how to navigate the maternity system, how to deal with pressure and understand risk and research.

Session Four- The Birth

Birth options: Exploring where you might give birth and the risks and benefits of each option.

The role of the birth partner: How to protect the space, advocate and support the hypnobirthing mum.

The birth: Understanding the stages of labour and what to do in each stage, comfort measures, introducing further hypnobirthing techniques 'down breathing' and back stroking.

The Golden Hour: How to maintain the optimal birth environment and the ins and outs of birthing the placenta.

Birth preferences: The role of birth preferences, the importance of writing them down and what things do you need to consider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hypnobirthing is for 'natural' births?

Many women do come to Hypnobirthing because they want to maximise their chances of having a physiological birth, and it is true Hypnobirthing Mums are less likely to have medical intervention. However, the journey of birth can take us down many unexpected roads and Hypnobirthing will equip you to navigate any bumps in the road.

Hypnobirthing will serve you we regardless of the ultimate mode of birth- it really is for ALL types of births.

Will I have a 'pain free' birth

I won’t make empty promises that Hypnobirthing will guarantee you a 'pain free' birth. However, Hypnobirthing mums are less likely to reach for pharmacological forms of pain relief. The tools you learn in hypnobirthing can help to manage the sensations of labour.

The 'Hypno' bit is off putting...

I understand you might be sceptical, as it might conjure up images of me waving a pocket watch in front of you and making you cluck like a chicken. But I can assure you I will do no such thing!

Yes, hypnobirthing does incorporate breathing, mindfulness, visulisation and guided relaxation. But really Hypnobirthing is best thought of as the 'phycology' of birth.

Just as athletes now see the value in preparing physically and mentally for a race, so too can you take steps to psychologically prepare for birth. You will learn all about the mind-body connection and how you can use this to your advantage to best equip you for giving birth.

Do I need to bring my birth partner?

Your booking allows you to bring a birth partner and I would actively encourage you do. Hypnobirthing values the role of the birth partner and they will also leave the course feeling empowered, confident and calm about birth, understanding how they can best support you during your birth journey.

However, you can absolutely do the course without a birth partner.

When is the best time to do the course?

The secret to Hypnobirthing is practice, practice, practice! I would advise starting the course around 20 weeks. However, it is never too late to do the course!

How long is the course?

The course is a full antenatal course and takes approx 12 hours. The course is split into 4 sections.
